BIM Case Study: Ladue Childhood Center

Advanced Solutions' Customers Employ BIM to Complete Project On Time and Under Budget

The Ladue Early Childhood Education Center provides a stimulating environment for the education and development of the young children of Ladue, Missouri, and the surrounding communities within the Ladue School District. The 50,000-square-foot building features engaging play areas, a teaching kitchen, colorful classrooms, and parents-as-teachers workspaces. Because of the need to get the school up and running as quickly as possible, the Ladue School District chose to design and build the school, which replaced a building constructed in 1936, as a fast-track project. BRIC Partnership, Bond Wolfe Architects and Larson Engineering, all Advanced Solutions customers, along with S.M. Wilson & Co., collaborated on the project in a building information modeling (BIM) environment using Autodesk Revit Architecture, Autodesk Revit MEP, Autodesk Revit Structure and Autodesk Navisworks Manage. Using this combination of BIM solutions enabled the firms to reduce costs, minimize errors and ultimately complete the project on time.

"With the fast track schedule on this project, there was a potential for coordination issues that could have negatively impacted the project," said James Pilla, Larson Engineering BIM manager. "BIM allowed us to exchange models with the other disciplines early on and stay coordinated throughout the accelerated design process. The utilization of BIM technology helped us avoid time consuming rework and played a key role in delivering the project under budget and ahead of schedule."

The Ladue Early Childhood Education Center was completed in August 2011. Key representatives from the four firms that made up the project team discussed the collaboration during a panel discussion on February 1 at Bond Wolfe Architects.

"A project like the Ladue Education Center is one stellar example of why Autodesk strives to educate architecture, engineering, and construction professionals about the benefits of BIM, equip them with the software necessary to do so, and train them to effectively use that software," said Steve Duffett, vice president, Architecture, Engineering and Construction Sales at Autodesk.
